Do you think you're funny?

Do you want to turn your sense of humor into a career?

If the answer is yes, then Judy Carter's The Comedy Bible is for you. The guru to aspiring stand-up comics provides the complete scoop on being -- and writing -- funny for money.

If you've got a sense of humor, you can learn to make a career out of comedy, says Judy Carter. Whether it's creating a killer stand-up act, writing a spec sitcom, or providing jokes for radio or one-liners for greeting cards, Carter provides step-by-step instructions in The Comedy Bible. She helps readers first determine which genre of comedy writing or performing suits them best and then directs them in developing, refining, and selling their work.

Using the hands-on workbook format that was so effective in her bestselling first book, Stand-Up Comedy: The Book, Carter offers a series of day-by-day exercises that draw on her many years as a successful stand-up comic and the head of a nationally known comedy school. Also included are practical tips and advice from today's top comedy professionals -- from Bernie Brillstein to Christopher Titus to Richard Lewis. She presents the pros and cons of the various comedy fields -- stand-up, script, speech and joke writing, one-person shows, humor essays -- and shows how to tailor your material for each. She teaches how to find your "authentic" voice -- the true source of comedy. And, perhaps most important, Carter explains how to take a finished product to the next level -- making money -- by pitching it to a buyer and negotiating a contract.

Written in Carter's unique, take-no-prisoners voice, The Comedy Bible is practical, inspirational, and funny.

What Customers Say About The Comedy Bible: From Stand-up to Sitcom--The Comedy Writer's Ultimate "How To" Guide:

I'm telling you, READING THIS BOOK AND APPLYING IT WILL HURT YOUR COMEDY CAREER. And isn't that what matters most. The most important thing you have to ask yourself is "Who the heck is Judy Carter." Why is she qualified to write a book on comedy. Trying to figure out the "structure" will make you LESS FUNNY.Jerry Seinfeld can write an advice book on comedy, so can Jay Leno, Louis CK, Steve Martin, etc, etc. Terrible advice. I was looking for something to take me to the next level. Don't do what I did - worst show of my life. It's rubbish.

It was a comedy competition where months prior I'd made it though to the 3rd round finals. Seriously. If you have absolutely no clue how to write jokes or be funny, I guess this book is better than nothing. If she was so great at comedy, she'd be DOING it right now. Daniel Tosh, Louis CK, Dennis Leary, Pablo Francisco, they ALL tell stories. So against my better judgment I re-wrote an entire 10 minute act using this advice. Just. I went on to have the WORST show I've ever had.

I read this book because I was looking for something to help my career. I'm really shocked by all the rave reviews on here for this book. But if you've done ANY stand-up at all, even for just 6 months, do NOT buy this book. And I fully believed that what I had done was going to work wonders for my set. But the problem is when you actually take the advice and use in on stage IT DOESN'T WORK. "something is WEIRD, something is SCARY, etc, etc." I thought, maybe she's right, maybe I really don't understand the STRUCTURE of jokes, maybe just telling jokes and stories that I think are funny is not the way to go, maybe I need STRUCTURED setups.

If you read the book and don't do anything I guess it can SEEM like a good book. YOU know WHAT is and is not funny. But the advice she offers doesn't work.I've been doing comedy for 10 years. I still haven't "made it" and have to work a day job. You'd see her on the tonight show, or comedy central, or she's have an HBO special. Trust your gut. It does give you lots of advice for your comedy career. You don't need the "joke structure" to tell it to you.

Some of the BEST comedians tell stories. .Judy Carter. She doesn't. You gotta' be kidding me. The other TERRIBLE advice she gives is she says "tell jokes, don't tell stories." REALLY. Because they're GOOD. I've never bombed so badly.

If you have even just DECENT natural talent, you'll intrinsically figure the structure out without even thinking about it, just by doing shows. Sure it's a well written self help book. She's old, washed up, doling out OLD advice. This time I got bumped out the first round. There is a big section in the book on what makes jokes funny, and the 5 specific words you should use. absolute CRICKETS.

OPnce I start reading it, I learn about punch lines and the future. My fiend Josh gave me this book. I gess he didn't like it at all. I am totally jealous.

The Book on Comedy by James Mar but he woudn't let me read it. that book looked more cool since it's a comics. Too bad my grandmother doesn't laugh when I punch her.Josh told me he got a better book. I was afraid to do killer comedy material but I did it.

my keyboard dodn't look lie that. But I don't know if I have what ot takes. I don't know why the did it. I think I want to grow up to be a cruise ship entertainer.

Once I got it, my classmates start laughing at me more and more and I didn't even read it yet. I took this book and wundered why there are a ahahhah keyboard on the cover. I think this book relly work.

I have been performing stand up for years and I still occasionally re-read the book for pointers. Her insights into how to write unique material is fantastic. Judy Carter's book is a masterpiece of how to do stand up comedy. More than that, it is also motivational and encouraging.

So if you can't manage to find a comedy buddy, I hope you have a split personality problem. She tends to frame the reader into subjects of her choice and tasks one must do with or without the comedy buddy to continue reading to the next section. She does provide good advice about the do's and dont's of stand up comedy along with some real good tips. I bought this as my first book to help me in my pursue of a career in comedy (stand up comedy to be specific). That's not so helpful when you're reading all alone in your room or at a coffee shop. However, she tends to contradict herself at times and sometimes seem irrational and bossy (she thinks it's funnier this way). This is not a book to read, it's more of a textbook she could use during her workshops. If you want to benefit from Judy Carter, if she's as good as she's known to be, then attend her workshop instead of buying this book. I'm not so happy with it. This book seems like it's based on her experience with students in her workshop and if you can not create the same atmosphere she manages to have in her workshops, then you will not get what she intends to give. For example, you have to make sure you have (what she calls) a comedy buddy, someone who she assumes is sitting on the next chair all the time to help you complete the tasks in each section.

I just wantd know the basic of comedy of how it werks][][][]]The bester book I fownd out there is THE BOOK ON COMEDY BY JAMES MAR. I just wanted to lern about comedy- what it is, insted of to learn how it is to be a comicedian. I didnt want to be in writing stand-coms or for any thing. I am only a kid and I red the Comedy Bibel.
